Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Rugby-Bundesliga is the highest level of Germany''s rugby union league system, organised by the German Rugby Federation. The German rugby championship was first played in 1909 and, with the exception of 2002, has always been determined by a final. The Rugby-Bundesliga was first played in two divisions in the 1971-72 season and soon consisted of eight teams in the North and eight teams in the South. However, of the eight southern teams, five were located in Heidelberg and after 1975 all northern teams were from Hanover. The league has changed its format a number of times over the years. In 1997-98, it played as a single-division league with eight teams. From 1998 to 2001, it was divided into two regional divisions again.

Alongside the national championship final, the 2nd Bundesliga final was played as a curtain raiser for the game. Last placed RK Heusenstamm would have been relegated but the league was expanded to nine teams for 2008-09 and no team had to drop down to the 2nd Bundesliga. This was decided on 19 July 2008 at the annual meeting of the German rugby association. The decision was made to expand the league to ten teams for the 2009-10 season.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Rugby-Bundesliga 2009 10 is the 39th edition of this competition and the 90th edition of the German rugby union championship. Ten teams play a home-and-away season with a finals round between the top four teams at the end. The bottom two teams are relegated. The season started on 29 August 2009 and will finish with the championship final on 29 May 2010, interrupted by a winter break from early December to late March. The competition''s defending champions are SC Frankfurt 1880, who won it in the previous two seasons. Below the Rugby-Bundesliga sits the 2nd Rugby-Bundesliga, which is divided into two divisions with ten teams each. With the RC Luxembourg, a team from Luxembourg, a non-German side competes in the league. The inclusion of this side in the 2009 promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga caused some debate in regards to its legality, as the club had not qualified through the German league system and was not a member of any of the German regional rugby federations.
